Position Overview:
We are seeking a Senior Engine Test & Calibration Engineer to lead the testing, calibration, and data analysis efforts for LiquidPiston’s advanced rotary engines. This is a hands-on, high-ownership role where you'll take full responsibility for the operation of engine test cells, from hardware and controls to data quality and calibration development.
You will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams to plan and execute test campaigns, develop control strategies, automate data workflows, and optimize engine performance for various fuels and operating conditions.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Take full ownership of engine dynamometer test cell operation, maintenance, and output quality
  • Design, build, and maintain engine test setups, including instrumentation and control systems
  • Plan and execute test programs to evaluate engine performance, durability, and emissions
  • Lead or assist in engine assembly and work closely with a test technician (and hands-on as needed)
  • Calibrate rotary engines for diesel and gasoline operation, focusing on performance and emissions
  • Modify and manage LabView-based systems for engine control and data acquisition
  • Develop MATLAB scripts for automated data processing, analysis, and reporting
  • Analyze test and calibration data, generate performance maps, and provide clear technical insights
  • Debug and resolve mechanical, electrical, or software issues impacting test or calibration workflows
  • Collaborate with design and controls engineers to improve engine hardware and control strategies
  • Drive continuous improvements in test and calibration processes, tools, and documentation
Required Qualifications:
  • B.S. or higher in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • 3+ years of professional experience in engine testing and/or calibration (rotary or piston)
  • Strong proficiency with MATLAB for data analysis and automation
  • Experience with CAN communication
  • Familiarity with LabView and real-time control/DAQ systems
  • Solid understanding of internal combustion engine fundamentals and efficiency concepts
  • Proven ability to work independently, own complex systems, and solve cross-disciplinary problems
  • Strong organizational skills and a high attention to detail
Helpful Experience:
  • Experience with advanced combustion technologies (EGR, Miller cycle, HCCI, boosting)
  • Familiarity with rotary engines or high-speed rotating machinery (gears, bearings, seals)
  • Experience with emissions testing and related instrumentation
  • Background in a machine shop, R&D, or prototype lab environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
Benefits:
  • Flexible PTO to encourage work-life balance and personal well-being
  • Comprehensive healthcare coverage: medical, dental, and vision plans
  • Equity participation: RSUs for all permanent employees
